Introducing and Interviewing the Great Christian Canadian Author Rolly Chabot

Rolly on his computer on deck
I have had the privilege to meet and read Author Rolly Chabot books. They are excellent.
His knowledge of the wilds of Canada, and love for the Lord is wonderful.. It makes great writing. This author has twenty books under his belt. Wow how impressive is that?
Okay on with the Interview.
Sitting down with Sir Rolly as I call him, I really think he is royalty, sits Quigley his loyal companion.
Sir Rolly is an extinguished man and very knowledgeable. What a pleasure I have had getting to know him.
“Hello Rolly, it is so good to meet you and Quigley.”
Hi Debbie, I want to first thank you, for asking me to do this interview. I am feeling very privileged, so thank you.”
“Rolly it is my privilege, and I think this is very exciting to get to know you. Tell me Rolly, where were you born and tell me about yourself and explain the town etc. and where do you live now?”

Debbie, I was born in the Capital City of Alberta Canada. My Dad had just returned from the war and he took his training as a Barber and bought a small Barber Shop and Pool Hall in a placed Called Bawlf Alberta. I think of it the peek there were 250 people in town and it was a tight knit community. Needless to say I could get away with little or nothing. It was a hard life really for my parents and us four children but the blessing was we had love, always plenty of food and shelter.
Now I live in a small community of about 3500 people. We are still small in the sense we have a three way and four way stops signs and no traffic lights. Coming from a city of over a million with traffic flying in all directions it is always a blessing to sit here and listen to their road reports on the radio. Our entertainment on a Saturday night is to get an ice cream and watch who cheats at the main four way stop. One of these days we may start taking pictures of the cheaters and post it in the newspaper… (As he grins) It is actually a nice little town a few hours from the mountains, a personal playground and close to the river valley and some fairly good fishing.”

“Rolly the town sounds wonderful, my kind of place to live. Tell me Sir Rolly; tell me about your writing, why do you like it so much?”

Debbie, writing allows me a voice for people who are maybe afraid to speak out, often for those who have come and gone in my life. Friends and yes even those who have left a trail of destruction. It affords me the pleasure of taking myself and the reader to places unknown, places I have been in the past. I write for the freedom of simply writing of God’s creation and the wonders He offers to us all.”

How wonderful Rolly, where do you get your inspiration from?”

Debbie, my inspiration comes from most aspects of life. Nature as I have mentioned inspires me greatly. A moment in the silence of sitting high above a valley floor or hiking along a river bank speaks loudly for those who are willing to listen. Take something as simple and yet as complex as a leaf and there is a story inside to be told. People inspire me, I love to sit and watch people and the interaction which happens when they gather, and sometimes walking in twos or several in a crowd. Listening to another share from their heart inspires me to incorporate what they are sharing in a novel someday and taking it back to a relevant Scripture or life application. “

“Rolly that is so inspiring to listen to you. Rolly, who inspires you, who are your favorite authors?”
“Debbie, My favorite Authors I would have to say would be Robert Service, Farley Mowat, Margret Atwood and of course Jack London. I love to search out new writers and read their works and with the advent of the Internet and so many emerging writers it is wonderful. I encourage everyone to sit and just allow it to flow from them, there is something very freeing in doing so. Even if it sits tucked away in your drawer or on your hard drive… write please.”
“Rolly, have you written any books? If you have, tell us all about it.”

Debbie, Yes I have written 20 books that have been published now and have another 5 in the edit mode. I started to journal several years ago about my adventures in the wilderness of the far North. I had stacks of journals I had kept over the years; sadly they were lost through misfortune. I started journaling again in 2000 as a way of healing and found it to be comforting. My wife encouraged me in 2009 to write a book of my adventures. The first book I ever wrote was called “The Quiet” and it started me on an adventure of a 7 book series called “Quiet Reflections,” each in the 20-30,000 word range. From there I changed up to a Genre I suppose could be classified as Christian/Romance/Fiction all in the 50-60,000 word range. I have 13 other novels published. Many are written in a series of 2 and 3 books. I believe you have the series called “Smoothwolf” which was a pleasure for me to write. Much of what I write I have been a part of or have been told of, of course the names have been changed and maybe the location but generally speaking they are true life stories. As I share a story I like to take the reader back to a Biblical application of where healing can be found and do so in a non-threatening manner.”
“Rolly, you are amazing, I have to tell you I read Smoothwolf, and fell in love with the main character Wes. You really did a good job with him. The next thing I would like to ask, tell me about your writing style.”

Debbie my writing style, now that is a hard question: I suppose the best answer would be one of love and adventure. My method of writing might be considered a bit unethical and somewhat random. Before I start on a project I create a character, often from a person I know or have come to know, male or female. From there I begin to write around an opening scene and the story just begins to develop without a plan or plot. Silly as it sounds it just happens, then additional characters appear and before long a flow begins. One of the greatest blessings for me is to attempt to experience what the reader finds as they continue to read. I often find myself being awakened in the middle of the night and called to write with a steaming cup of coffee. God and I have some interesting conversations about why He has awaken me but at the end of the day He has shown me. “

“Rolly that is amazing my friend. I love it when God wakes me up and speaks to me. What advice would you give to new writers?”

“Debbie, what advice would I give to new writers? I think it would have to be to write from the heart. Forget about all the glitz and glamor. The reader has chosen your book and you as a writer should feel privileged and blessed they have purchased your novel or followed the work you have struggled over. Consider it in this way, we are all consumers and we love good service. The waitress who took the extra effort to see to it you are catered too will be given a generous gratuity. When you offer your words from the heart you will connect with your reader at the basic human level. In saying so I think the reader feels a connection and they in turn are getting value. Stimulate the mind of the reader but yet allow them to venture into the story and create parts of the scene themselves. The heart to heart connection is a must in my opinion.”
Rolly, please tell us something personal about yourself. The world wants to know.”

“Debbie, something personal about me: That could be a loaded question. It is no secret that I suffered for years with addictions of alcohol and drugs. It was in nature and His creation that I found peace and healing. I had run from life for so many years I had even lost myself. A friend had a helicopter business and he had contracts to fly in close proximity to very isolated microwave towers, the law stated he needed a spotter and I was it. The payoff was Wes would land at my cabin and we would secure my canoe and gear under the machine and off we would go. After the work was done Wes would drop me into a remote location of my choice. The last human sound I would hear was him flying away. It was just me, God’s creation, my dedicated dog Tannis, canoe, gear and rifle. Often where I found myself would be 200 plus miles from any civilization. It is here that a man comes to know himself and his limitations in some of the most adverse conditions. It has a way of shaping you quickly when you have depended on your skills to survive.”
Rolly you sound like Harrison ford to be in all of his adventures in Indiana Jones. But yours were real life. Amazing! I would love to know your favorite music?”

Debbie, my favorite music, well I like quiet music. Right now I have some soft piano music playing. I find radio and TV far too noisy and brash but I do like some programs. Bands, well I like the oldies of course. Brian Doerksen a Christian songwriter is a favorite and he has a powerful message.”
“Rolly, you are talking my kind of music. I do love soft piano music and gospel is the best. Tell me, what is your favorite thing in the world to do?”

Debbie, my favorite thing in the world to do: smiles. That is an easy question. “Fly fishing” would have to be the answer. Fly fishing is the purest form of fishing in my opinion. Trout are very smart and difficult to catch. The fly that catches the fish takes a long while to tie properly and when you hold a newly caught fish in your hands and admire its beauty before you gently slip into the water again is such a blessing. I live very near to the world renowned Bow River known to be one of the finest Trout Rivers in the world. There is nothing better than drifting down the river in my pontoon boat and spending the day fly fishing. The run I make takes about 13 hours and is about 55 miles. Now that is a good day.”
“Rolly, I would have to take one of those Trout and eat them. I love trout. You have a great heart…. Tell us where have you traveled?”

“Debbie, I have traveled extensively in Canada and the US both for work and for pleasure. Both our countries are so vast and have so much to offer and I have very little interest in travel-ling beyond. My favorite place would without a doubt be the Yukon as you may have already guess. The days of tossing a canoe over my shoulders and carrying it for miles are long past but I am sure I could still find some isolated place to call home for a while.
Rolly, tell us your favorite books you wrote?”

Debbie, my favorite book would have to be the series called “Smoothwolf.” The plight of the North American Native has always had a special place in my heart. The First Nations people have suffered under the hand of man for far too many years. In the series I detail much of the life of Wes Nickel, a Blackfoot Native suffered greatly in his younger years and his climb to finding fame in his own world and eventually love.”
Rolly, yes I have to admit that is my favorite book too. Tell me what do you like to write Poetry or stories?”
“Debbie, I would have to say I enjoy writing novels over poetry. I will leave the poetry to the experts. The poet is a very deep thinker and has a special way of reaching into your heart. I have dabbled a little into poetry and maybe someday will take it on as a challenge. One can never tell what the future holds.
“Rolly, I do love poetry as you know, but your books are so wonderful to read it’s a form of poetry to me. Tell me your favorite thoughts my friend.”

Debbie, my favorite thoughts would have to be for world peace, for man to love as we are called to love and live in harmony. I see so much unrest in the world and when you look closely it is growing in ours as well. We have been so blessed to live in countries where we have plenty. I have been corresponding with a dear friend and his family in Zimbabwe for the past eight years. Patrick sweeps floors and washes windows in an Internet Cafe to be able to email me. His faith and love he and his family extend to me has been such a blessing. My desire is to someday be able to bring them from such oppression and see them succeed. Patrick has never once asked for money and refused any financial help. All he has asked for is prayer. To me that have been a favorite thought as it is something we can all do. I would ask that you join me in prayer for provision and blessing in their lives.”
“Rolly, I agree and I would love to join you in prayer. I want to thank you again my friend for a great interview I know everyone would love to learn more about a great writer like you.”
